Biography
Lucatela was born in Croatia ( Yugoslavia ). After school, he entered the University of Zagreb at the Faculty of Geodesy, which he graduated in 1971, receiving a diploma in geodesic engineering.
He started working at IBM in Zagreb, where he provided general systems design services for the company's customers, mainly in the field of scientific and system programming.
In 1973, Hrvoe moved to Canada, where he worked for several engineering companies in the fields of engineering surveys, project management, and technical computing projects. One of his projects led to the development of an automatic coordination library for a horizontal geodetic control adjustment program for the Ontario Department of Natural Resources. Another interesting project was a field astronomy program for orientational communication with Mecca for the mock campus of King Abdel Aziz University.
Since 1980, lives in Calgary. There, Hrvoe took part in the pipeline construction project in Alaska, where he was responsible for managing computer-aided design and project management systems. Here he conceived and first applied a new method of geo-referencing and processing large volumes of data related to location.
In 1985, Hrvoe independently began advising Shell and other companies on issues related to the geometry and design of large spatial databases.
In 1991, Lucatela together with John Russell created the company Geodyssey Limited.
Hrvoe is a member of the Ontario Professional Engineers Association and the Canadian Cartographic Association. He has published many articles on computational geodesy and spatial databases.
Nemo Point
In 1992, Hrvoye Lukatela, using computer simulation, calculated Point Nemo, the ocean pole of inaccessibility. He was offered the name of this conditional point, referring to the name of the captain Nemo , the hero of the novels of Jules Verne , who decided to distance himself from humanity. This point is located in the South Pacific , coordinates South
The closest land points to Point Nemo are the uninhabited Dusi Atoll and Motu Nui Island , both located 2,688 km from Point Nemo [1] . The nearest inhabited place is Easter Island , northeast of Motu Nui.
Nemo Point is on the list of Earth poles of inaccessibility as the Ocean Pole of Inaccessibility.
An interesting fact is that the orbit of the International Space Station can pass over the Nemo Point, since its inclination is greater than the latitude of the Nemo Point. Thus, from time to time, the space station becomes the closest inhabited place to the Nemo Point at a distance of 400 km, but in space .
