DescriptionThe body is elongated, its height fits 3.6-3.8 times in the standard body length. The head is large, pointed, on it there are only nasal and coronal spines. The massive lower jaw is advanced forward, and a symphysial tubercle pointing downward is located at its end. The upper jaw extends beyond the vertical passing through the posterior edge of the eye. The interorbital distance is convex. The branchial stamens are long and thin; on the first branchial arch, 27–32 stamens. The long dorsal fin has 12-15 spiny and 13-15 soft rays. In the anal fin there are 3 spiny and 7-10 soft rays. Spiky rays are short. The ends of the pectoral fins do not reach the anus. In the ventral fins one is prickly and 5 soft rays. Caudal fin with a small notch. In the lateral line 51–70 scales [1] [2] .
The back is painted olive brown, the sides are pink or red. In immature individuals less than 25 cm long, small brown dots are scattered on the sides of the body. The lateral line is cream or pinkish-brown in color [2] .
The maximum body length is 91 cm [3] .
BiologyThe maximum life span is 50 years [4] .
Nutrition
After hatching, the larvae and fry of bocaccio feed on zooplankton . After reaching a body length of about 15 cm at the age of one year, they switch to feeding on young fish (other types of sea bass, horse mackerel , live-bearing and others). The diet of adult bocaccio off the coast of California includes small fish (small individuals of sea bass, anchovy , mikthof , charcoal , California anchovy and others) and squid (in particular Loligo opalescens ) [5] .
Reproduction
Viviparous fish. Fertilization is internal, in different parts of the range occurs in different seasons. Sperm is stored inside the female for several months until the eggs are fertilized. Hatching occurs inside the female. Fertility varies from 200 thousand to 2300 thousand eggs. In some regions, the female can sweep several servings of larvae per season. The larvae will be washed in different seasons of the year: British Columbia - February; Washington January - April; Oregon January - February; Northern and Central California January - March or November - March; Southern California October - March [6] [7] [8] [9] .
DistributionDistributed in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. The range extends from Baja California to Alaska Bay ( Cruise and Kodiak Islands). Common in the coastal waters of California and Oregon . They live on the shelf and continental slope at a depth of 50 to 570 m, usually at depths of 100-200 m [1] .
