Pierre Charles van der Stappen (Pierre Charles van der Stappen) ( fr. Charles van der Stappen ; September 19, 1843 , Saint-Joss-ten-Node , Brussels - October 21, 1910 , Brussels ) - Belgian sculptor , teacher , rector of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (since 1898).

Biography

In 1859-1868 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels , later its director. Since 1869, regularly exhibited in the Brussels Salon . For ten years he regularly visited and lived in Paris , Florence and Rome .

He became the recognized authority of the new Belgian school of sculpture. In 1893 he collaborated with Constantine Meunier , working on the decoration of the Botanical Garden of Brussels. From 1894 to 1898, 52 sculptures (animals and plants, seasons, lanterns and fountains) were made under their guidance.

He taught at the academy. Rector of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (since 1898).

His works were inspired by classical Greek and Renaissance sculptures, approaching realistic and even symbolic sculptures of the time.

The author of portrait busts , figures of a mythological nature and a number of monumental and decorative works to decorate Brussels. He owns monuments and statues to Alexander Jandebien (1874), Theodor Baron , William I of Orange , allegory statues of Liège and Antwerp in the Fiftieth anniversary park (Brussels) .

The author of "The Mysterious Sphinx" (1897) of one of the main symbols of modern art. This exquisite sculpture adorning the Brussels Museum of Art and History today was created for the Honorary Salon of the Colonial Exhibition in Tervuren in 1897, which was one of the main components of the World Exhibition in Brussels [4] .

The works of Pierre Charles Van der Stappen are characterized by the usual raid of " academic naturalism " in his era.

Among his students is sculptor Victor Russo .
