History

The bank was founded under the name Banco Nacional de San Carlos , its first director was the French banker Francisco Cabarrus .

After a series of wars from 1793 to 1814 , the Bank borrowed more than 300 million reais from the government, and therefore the Spanish Government was in financial difficulties. Treasury Minister Luis Lopez Ballesteros in 1829 created a fund of 40 million reais to secure the Bank's obligations, the Bank was renamed Banco Espanol de San Fernando the same year.

In the 1850s, the Bank expanded its operations in the cities of Alicante and Valencia and changed its name to the Bank of Spain currently in use. Demanding financial support from the Bank during the civil and colonial wars, the Spanish government in 1874 granted the Bank of Spain a monopoly on the issuance of Spanish banknotes .

In 1946, after the end of the civil war , the government of General Francisco Franco established tight state control over the Bank. In 1962, the Bank was formally nationalized . After the restoration of democracy in the late 1970s , the Bank underwent a reform of its structure and functions.

In 1994, after Spain joined the European Monetary Union , the Bank of Spain became a member of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).
