Biography
From the end of 1940 participated in the resistance movement . Pupil K. G. Jung , G. Bashlyar , A. Korben . In 1947 - 1956 professor of philosophy, and then - sociology and anthropology at the University of Grenoble 2 (later - professor emeritus). One of the founders (together with Leon Selye and Paul Duchamp) of the Center for the Study of Imagination ( 1966 ). He was close to the international and interdisciplinary circle of researchers of religious and spiritual life " Eranos ".
Research Interests
On a wide material from traditional mythologies and fairy tales to literature and cinema, he explores the forms of space, time, causality, modes of reality, experiences of communion and alienation, joy, fear and so on. in representations of an imaginary world. His most famous monograph is “Anthropological structures of the imaginary” ( 1960 , reprint).
J. Durant introduced such concepts as “imagery” (“l'imaginaire”, the primary process consisting of the imaginary, imagining, imagination and the process of imagination at the same time), “trajectory” (“trajet anthropologique”, an independent phenomenon located between the subject and an object), as well as three anthropological types - diurn (day mode), dramatic and mystical nocturne, which reflect the deep subconscious response of an individual to death and determine behavior in society. Recognition
Duran's works have been translated into English, Russian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Korean, and other languages.
In 2000 he was ranked among the Righteous of the world . In 2007 he received the title of Commander of the Legion of Honor .
