Biography
Damian Austin was born November 30, 1974 in the city of Las Tunas , Cuba .
He first made his name in the 1991 season when he became the bronze medalist in the lightweight boxing championship of Cuba. He achieved his first major success in the international arena in 1992, when he joined the Cuban national team and won the World Junior Championships in Montreal.
In 1993 he again received bronze in the classification of the Cuban national championship, in the light weight category he won at the Strandzhi Memorial in Bulgaria and at the World Championship in Tampere .
For a long time he did not fall into the main team, but in 1997 he finally became the champion of Cuba, having defeated all his competitors in the welterweight.
In 1998, he celebrated his victory at the Giraldo Cordoba Cardin international home tournament and performed at the Goodwill Games in New York , where he was stopped by the American Ricardo Williams in the quarterfinals.
In 2000 he was again the best at the Giraldo Cordoba Cardin, but already in the first middle weight category.
In 2001, he won a gold medal at the Cuban Championship, at the World Championships in Belfast and at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane .
The last time he showed any significant results in boxing in the 2002 season, when he again became the champion of Cuba, won the Strandji Memorial in Plovdiv, the Usti Grand Prix in the Czech Republic, the Chemistry Cup in Halle - here in the finals he defeated the representative of Kazakhstan Gennady Golovkin , future multiple world champion among professionals [1] .
