Career
During his studies at the University of Virginia in 2004-2007, Tierney played for the university football team. For four years, as part of the Virginia Cavaliers at the National University Sports Association, he played 79 games in which he scored 11 goals and gave 16 assists. In 2006, he helped the team reach the College Cup - the final of the four national student championships.
In an additional draft of the 2008 MLS, Tierney was selected in the first round under the 13th number by the New England Revolution Club [1] . The club signed a reserve contract with him on June 3 [2] . His professional debut took place on June 21 in a match against Real Salt Lake . In the Super League 2008 final, in which the New England Revolution beat Houston Dynamo in the penalty shoot-out after a 2: 2 draw, Tierney scored from a penalty spot [3] . The club signed a full-fledged contract with him in January 2009 [4] .
Tierney became a player in the starting lineup of the New England Revolution in the 2010 season , playing in a variety of positions in the mid and back lines, such as left back, center back, right back, defensive midfielder and attacking midfielder [5] . September 4, 2010 in a match against the " Seattle Sounders " scored his first goal in a professional career [6] [7] .
In the final match of the 2014 season , in which the New England Revolution met for the Los Angeles Galaxy for the MLS Cup , Tierney scored a goal equalizing the score (1: 1) and transferring the match to extra time, where the Los Angeles players snatched victory thanks to a goal by Robbie Keane (2: 1) [8] [9] [10] .
Tierney was supposed to play in the all-stars match of MLS 2015, in which Tottenham Hotspur was invited to oppose the national team of leading local players, being selected by the coach of the MLS stars team Pablo Mastroeni [11] [12] , but from the composition for the game on July 29, due to injury, dropped out [13] [14] .
In the final of the 2016 US Open Cup , in which on September 13 the New England Revolution lost to Dallas with a score of 4: 2, Tierney came on as a substitute in the first half [15] .
He missed most of the 2018 season due to a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee, which happened in the match against Atlanta United on May 30 [16] [17] . At the end of the 2018 season, New England Revolution did not renew the contract with Tierney and he became a free agent [18] [19] , the player spent 11 years in the club [20] .
On November 15, 2018, Chris Tierney announced the end of his football career [21] [22] [23] .
