September referendums

Three referendums were held on September 23: on the prohibition of smoking, on the safety of home ownership in old age, and on the teaching of music in schools [4] .

  • The People’s Smoking Ban Initiative, proposed by the Pulmonary League, called for a clear and universal national ban and the destruction of smoking rooms and smoking establishments that were still permitted in some cantons. Odanako initiative was rejected by 66% of the vote.
  • The proposal for the security of home ownership in old age allowed retired homeowners to receive lower real estate ratings by forgiving property tax debts. The proposal was rejected by 52.6% of the vote.
  • The proposal for music education required federal and cantonal governments to stimulate music lessons for children. However, the federal government stated that it was contrary to cantonal sovereignty in education. As a result, the counter proposal was debated and approved by 72.7% of the vote.
