Charles Byeksler Haiser ( born Charles Bixler Heiser ; October 5, 1920 - June 11, 2010 ) is an American botanist , researcher of taxonomy of asteraceae, especially sunflower , professor at Indiana University since 1957, member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA .

Biography
Born October 5, 1920 in the town of Sintian in the south of Indiana . He graduated from school in Belleville (southern Illinois), in 1939 entered the University of Washington in St. Louis , where he planned to study journalism or English. However, under the influence of Professor Robert Everard Woodson became interested in botany. In 1943 he received a bachelor's degree under the leadership of Edgar Anderson , in 1944 under the leadership of Jesse Mora Greenman he defended a master's degree in which he considered the genus Psilostrophe .
In 1944, Charles married Dorothy Gebler, with whom the two of them were the only listeners of the advanced course of E. Anderson's taxonomy.
Since 1945, Heiser has been at the University of California at Berkeley . Two years later, in 1947, he prepared and defended a Ph.D. thesis in which he considered the problems of hybridization in sunflower. Since 1946, he taught at Berkeley.
After defending his thesis, Charles Heiser left Berkeley, having received an invitation to become an assistant professor at Indiana University . In 1951 he became an adjunct professor, in 1957 a professor. He lectured on the systematics of flowering plants, economic botany, accounting for vascular plants.
In 1953, becoming the owner of the Guggenheim Fellowship , Heiser traveled to Costa Rica. In 1962 and 1969, he traveled to Ecuador, where he studied the systematics and possibilities of naranhilya hybridization.
In 1985, Heizer was awarded the V. Pustovoit Prize of the International Sunflower Association.
In 1987, for a contribution to systematics and research on hybridization and evolution of cultivated plants, he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA .
In 1967 - President of the American Society for Plant Taxonomy, in 1980 - the Botanical Society of America .
In 2008, experienced a cerebral hemorrhage. He died on June 11, 2010 .
