Biography

Antonio Alberico II Malaspina in 1481 after the death of his father became the Marquis of Massa and the lord of Carrara. At first he ruled together with his brother Francesco, but removed him from power.

Having no sons, Antonio Alberico II appointed the eldest daughter, Eleanor, wife of Shipione Fieschi, Count di Lavagna, as the heiress. But in 1516 she died, and her widowed husband married Richard. After the death of Antonio Alberico II (1519), they became rulers of Massa and Carrara.

A year later, Shipione Fieschi died, and Richard married Lorenzo Chibo (July 20, 1500 - March 14, 1549) a noble Genoese nobleman, brother of Cardinal Innocenzo Chibo, grandson of Pope Innocent VIII . Their descendants ruled the Marquis of Massa and the lord of Carrara until 1829.

From 1530 to 1541, Lorenzo Chibo was co-ruler of Richard, but after a marital quarrel, she removed him from control with the help of Emperor Charles V , whom she was an ally during the Italian Wars . She accused her husband of leading an idle life in Rome and not participating in business.

In October 1546, her son Giulio, with military and financial support from the Duke of Florence Cosimo I of Medici and the Genoese Admiral Andrea Doria, and with the help of his father, seized power in the Principality. Richard turned to Charles V, and his troops restored her to the throne.

In December of that year, Giulio married Peretta Doria (1526–1591), a relative of Andrea Doria, and counted on him as an ally. However, by that time the admiral himself was in the imperial service, and therefore refused help.

Then Giulio, along with Ottobuono Fieschi, expelled from Genoa, began to prepare a plot to seize power in the republic. They were supported by the Florentine Strozzi and Pope Paul III . The plot was uncovered, Giulio Chibo was arrested in Pontremoli, and in May 1548 he was executed (beheaded). Richard tried to save her son from death, but to no avail.

Since 1550, the Marquise lived in Rome, managing her possessions through castellans. She died on June 15, 1553 after a long illness, probably in Massa. She was succeeded by her youngest son - Alberico I (1534-1623), who adopted the name Chibo-Malaspin.
