Shchedrin, Apollon Fedoseevich

Apollon Fedoseevich Shchedrin (1796-1847) - Russian architect , college adviser ; Academician and professor of the theory of building art at the Imperial Academy of Arts ; brother of the artist Sylvester Shchedrin . One of the pioneers of steam heating in the Russian Empire.

Biography

Apollon Shchedrin was born on November 1 (12), 1796 in the city of St. Petersburg in the family of the architect and rector of the Imperial Academy of Arts Feodosiy Fedorovich Shchedrin [1] . In 1809, he was enrolled in the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts ; during the course in it, he was awarded three silver medals for successes and work done, and in 1818 he was graduated from it with the title of artist of the 14th class and a small gold medal awarded to him for drawing up the “ Project of the fair with its buildings ” [ 2] .

Soon after graduation, Shchedrin joined the alma mater as an assistant architect and supervisor of her buildings, and a few years later he became a teacher in the theory of building art and held this position until his death [2] .

In 1833 "Apollo Fedoseevich Shchedrin was awarded the title of professor for the diligence shown in classes with students and for thorough acquaintance with the subject taught , and in 1837 he was awarded the title of Academician of IAH [2] .

In addition to teaching, A. F. Shchedrin also engaged in architectural work, built a number of private houses in St. Petersburg and in the last years of his life was an architect at the departments of the Ministry of Public Education of the Russian Empire , the Holy Synod and military schools [2] .

Of his works, special attention should be paid to the decoration of the building, previously occupied by 12 colleges , on the University Embankment of the capital , to accommodate the university in it [2] ; the construction of a new building of the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary , the construction of the 4th floor of the Women's Patriotic Institute and the design of buildings in the Philippi desert of the Solovetsky Monastery .

The main scientific merit of Shchedrin is his many years of work on “Practical Architecture”, the completeness and validity of which greatly helped his many years of teaching and the many buildings he built in St. Petersburg [2] .

Apollon Fedoseevich Shchedrin died on December 19, 1847 in his hometown and was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery [2] .

Merits of Shchedrin were awarded the Order of St. Anne of the III degree and a diamond ring.

His son Alexander followed in the footsteps of his father and also became an academician of architecture.
