Kuznetsov, Ivan Georgievich

Ivan Georgievich Kuznetsov (1892-1946) - Soviet geologist , doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences. One of the largest researchers in stratigraphy , tectonics, mineralogy , petrography, ore and non-ore deposits, karst and glacier phenomena, issues of engineering and military geology of the Caucasus in the 1920s - 1930s [1] .

Biography

He was born on August 27 ( September 8 ), 1892 [2] , in the Nalchik settlement ( Terek region , Russian Empire) into a peasant family.

He studied at a suburban elementary school (3 departments) and a mountain school (3 classes) in the city of Nalchik. Then, in a real school in the city of Vladikavkaz , which he graduated in 1912.

In 1919 he graduated from the Mining Institute in Petrograd . Studied at the "Caucasian scholarship" (25 rubles per month)

He began working in the Geological Committee under the leadership of A.P. Gerasimov - a collector on expeditions (1914-1918), a research fellow (from January 1, 1919). He worked in the Central Caucasus (1920, 1923-1929), on the Kola Peninsula (1921-1922). In 1932 he was the head of the Roki expedition TsNIGRI ( Roki tunnel ). In 1934 he was the head of the Integrated Balkarian expedition TsNIGRI.

He participated in the preparation and excursions of the 17th session of the International Geological Congress (USSR, 1937).

At the same time he lectured on mineralogy at the Mining Institute (1920-1922; 1930-1932).

In 1937-1939 - professor of geology at the Pedagogical Institute in the city of Ordzhonikidze .

Since 1939, he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences, took part in the Caucasian expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

Since 1923, he conducted annual field research in the Caucasus [3] :

  • made the first detailed subdivision of Mesozoic shales on the southern slope of the Main Caucasus Range (Lower Jurassic);
  • proved the Precambrian age of part of the metamorphic rocks of the Dzirul massif and gneisses of the Central and Western Caucasus;
  • developed the tectonic structure of the Caucasus;
  • clarified the stratigraphic diagram of geosynclinal deposits of the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus Range , identified the Lower Cretaceous flysch and carbonate deposits of the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous .

He discovered and described (1925) a new mineral - loparite [4] .

He died on June 9, 1946 in Moscow.
