Biography

Born in the family of a priest, bachelor of the Moscow Theological Seminary. Grand-nephew and godson of the Moscow Metropolitan Filaret (Drozdov).

Educated at the Moscow Theological Seminary (1850) and Academy (1854). He graduated from the Academy with a master's degree in Theology for his dissertation “Patriarch Photius” [1] . He was left at the Academy with a bachelor of biblical history and a teacher of Greek. In 1856, he was transferred to the Department of Philosophy with a bachelor's degree in logic, psychology and the history of philosophy.

In June 1857 he was ordained a priest of the Ascension of the Moscow Virgin Monastery in Moscow. In the same year he became a member of the academic conference and the Committee for the censorship of spiritual books and was a censor until his death.

Since December 1857, he taught in the class of moral and pastoral theology, still in the post of bachelor. In 1860 he was appointed extraordinary professor of the Moscow Theological Academy, in 1865 - an ordinary professor.

Since December 1870, Sergievsky was reckoned with the Intercession Church at the Moscow Theological Academy.

Since 1874 he was rector of the Bethany Theological Seminary . In 1882, he was elected an honorary member of the Moscow Theological Academy.

In 1883 [2] he was appointed rector of the Archangel Cathedral .

In the “ Orthodox Review ” and “ Useful Reading ” his sermons and “words” were printed.

He was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir 4th degree [3] .

Family

Brother - Senator Nikolai Alexandrovich Sergievsky .

Wife - daughter of Moscow archpriest Nikolai Dmitrievich Lavrov , Elizaveta Nikolaevna. Their kids:

  • Vasily (1856 - after 1919) - priest in Moscow.
  • Alexander (1862-1897) - teacher of the Kolomna Theological College, author of local history works.
  • Sergey (1864 - after 1908) is an employee of the office of the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod in St. Petersburg, one of the employees of the Orthodox Theological Encyclopedia [4] .
  • Nikolai (1866 - after 1900) - lecturer at the Mariinsky Diocesan School, author of works on church history, editorial staff of the Moscow Church Gazette.
  • Anna (1857—?) - was married to the Moscow archpriest Sergei Vasilyevich Uspensky (1854-1930).
  • Olga (1871—?) - was married to a teacher Peter Nikolayevich Fortinsky (1867 - after 1916).
