Lanarkshire is also the county of Lanark ( Gaelic. Siorrachd Lannraig , Scotts Lanrikshire ) - a historic county in the lowlands ( Scotland , UK ). The main city is Glasgow .

The area of the county was 2300 km². The population was 161,400 people (1951).
History
In the Middle Ages, Lanarkshire was the most densely populated county in Scotland and had a significantly larger territory, including the neighboring until 1402 . [1] Nowadays, Lanarkshire borders in the north with and a separate part of , in the northeast Stirlingshire and West Lothian , in the east , in the southeast and south , southwest of Dumfrisshire and and west of Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire. [2]
Lanarkshire was historically divided between two administrative regions. In the mid- 18th century, it was divided into three parts: the upper, middle, and lower with administrative centers in , Hamilton and Glasgow, respectively, and remained so until the adoption of the Local Government Act of 1889. Other important settlements of Lanarkshire are Cotbridge , East Kilbride , Motherwell , , , , , and . [3]
In 1975, the was abolished and the region entered the larger , which in 1996 itself was divided into new districts . The old Lanarkshire area is now divided into four counties:
- East Dunbartonshire (from 1996 to the present)
- Glasgow City (from 1996 to the present)
- North Lanarkshire (from 1996 to the present)
- South Lanarkshire (from 1996 to the present)
North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire have a joint commission for evaluating and registering voters. There is also a joint medical commission that does not cover Rutherglen and its surroundings in South Lanarkshire. Without northern North Lanarkshire, it is also the ceremonial county of Lanarkshire.
In August 2011, International Children's Games were held in Lanarkshire. [4] A total of 1300 athletes and trainers, as well as functionaries and delegates representing 77 cities from 33 countries of the world, participated.
Economics
The county has developed such industries as ferrous metallurgy, shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, railway engineering, and the textile industry. Coal is being mined.
