Domus Sanctae Marthae ( Rus. House of Saint Martha , IT. Casa Santa Marta ) is an extension to the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, which currently serves as the residence of the Pope of Rome , as well as the residence of the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church . Received its name in honor of St. Martha of Bethany .
History
The building is located on the site of the hospice of St. Martha, built by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 [1] . The current home of St. Martha was built after John Paul II in 1996 in the Universi Dominici Apostolic Constitution, Gregis introduced new rules for electing a pontiff, prescribing, in particular, the rules for accommodating participants of the conclave [2] . After his election in 2013, Pope Francis announced that he would not move to the Apostolic Palace - the official papal residence - but would remain in the House of Saint Martha [3] .
