Biography
Received secondary education in Kobuleti .
In 1953 he graduated from Tbilisi State University and entered graduate school at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the GSSR. In March 1955, he arrived at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna) to take a postgraduate course led by Venedikt Petrovich Dzhelepov .
In 1957-62, a researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. In 1962 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences. Since 1962, he worked at TSU, was a researcher at the Cybernetics Laboratory of TSU, and head of the department of the research laboratory of high-energy nuclear physics. Director of the Institute of High Energy Nuclear Physics.
In 1975 he defended his doctoral dissertation, in 1979 he was elected a corresponding member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, and in 1988 - an academician. Since 1992 - full representative of Georgia at the United Nations Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna.
Rector of the University of Tbilisi from September 13, 1985 to August 27, 1991. In 1988, he led the organization and conduct of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the university. In 1991 he was appointed director of the Institute of High Energy Physics; in November he was invited as a professor to the Department of General Physics of TSU. Since 1994, he was a member of the Presidium of the Georgian Academy of Sciences.
Member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1989-1990).
