Biography
He studied at the Manhattan School of Music . In 1939 he graduated from City College , and in 1942 - Columbia University (both in New York), then improved at the University of Paris (1959). Among his teachers were: Paul Henry Lang , Erich Herzman , Hugh Ross , Roger Sessions . In 1945 he became a professor at Queens College in New York, and in 1967 - City University of New York . Since 1967 - editor of the bibliographic publication " International Catalog of Musical Literature ". He is the author of books on the history of music, as well as articles published in The Musical Quarterly and Fontes artis musicae and other music magazines. He specialized in secular music of the Renaissance , musical iconography, sociology of music, musical aesthetics, musical ethnography, and others. In 1981-1985, he was president of the International Musical Council. In 1971 and 1981 he visited the USSR .
