Tectonics
South Alaska lies on the eastern edge of the Aleutian Trench , where the North American Plate creeps onto the Pacific Plate . Near Anchorage, the slabs shift at a rate of 57 mm per year [1] . Strong earthquakes have already occurred in this region, including mega earthquakes. The Alaskan 964 magnitude 9.2 sting was the strongest in the history of North America and the second strongest ever recorded. Although Alaska earthquakes occur frequently, they are usually located in the sea [4] .
Repeated pushes
During the day, more than 80 repeated shocks were recorded, [5] , of which at least three were of a magnitude greater than 5.0 [6] .
Implications
The earthquake caused severe damage to several buildings and a road junction near Anchorage International Airport [7] . There were no dead [8] .
Four airports were closed for boarding, including Anchorage Airport, Adak Airport , Merrill-Field Airport and Elmendorf-Richardson Airport.
The infrastructure of Anchorage [9] , including the road, multi-tiered road junctions, and traffic lights [10], has suffered greatly. The work of the Alaskan railway was also discontinued due to numerous damage to the operations centers and the unknown state of the railway network [11] .
