Antarctic Protected Area - An area protected under the Antarctic Treaty . [1] There are three types of protected areas under international agreements:
- Antarctic Specially Protected Natural Area (ASPA) as part of agreed measures for the conservation of Antarctic fauna and flora (1964) and Annex V to the Protocol on Environmental Protection (2002). Only 72 places.
- Antarctic Specially Managed Areas (ASMA) in Annex V of the Protocol (2002). Only 7 places.
- Historic Site or Monument (HSM). Only 92 places.
Guidelines have been developed for scientists and other visitors to these places to protect these areas.
