Candidates

Former President Mark Ravalumanana, who resigned after the political crisis in 2009 , announced his participation in the presidential election [1] . His successor, Andri Radzuelina, also announced his intention to run for election [2] . The current head of state, Eri Radzaunarimampianina, unsuccessfully tried to block the participation in the elections of both ex-presidents Radzuelina and Ravalumanan on the grounds that they participated in the 2009 coup. In September 2018, Radzaunarimampianina resigned to run again and be re-elected as president [3] .

In total, a record number of candidates for the post of head of state participated in the elections - 36 candidates, including four of the last five presidents of Madagascar ( Didier Ratsiraka , Mark Ravalumanana , Andri Radzuelina and Eri Radzaunarimampianina ) [4] .

Post-election events

The Independent National Electoral Commission published the preliminary results of the second round of elections on December 29, while the official results will be summed up by the Constitutional Court on January 8, 2019. The inauguration of the newly elected president is scheduled for January 19 [5] .

Mark Ravalumanana, the loser of the election, said that he did not recognize the election results and accused his rival Andri Radzuelina of mass fraud, despite the fact that international observers praised the work of the election commissions [6] . Since January 1, Ravalumanana supporters have been participating in mass protests in the capital Antananarivo. Protesters block roads, set fire to tires and attack police cordons. Militiamen respond to performances with tear gas [7] [8] [9] .

On January 9, 2019, the Constitutional Court recognized the legality of the election of Radzuelina. [ten]

Reports of Russian Intervention

According to the BBC , the election campaign of at least 6 presidential candidates was conducted with Russian money in exchange for concluding an agreement. Moreover, among those supported by Russia, there could be an elected head of state - Andri Radzuelina [11] [12] . The publication " Project " confirmed the information about the interference in the elections and issued an investigation on this subject [13] .
