August Heckscher II ( born August Heckscher II , September 16, 1913, Huntington - April 5, 1997 , New York , USA ) is an American intellectual and author of studies on American liberalism of political figures, in particular, Woodrow Wilson [1] .

Early life

August Heckscher was born in Huntington on Long Island on September 16, 1913 in the family of Gustav Maurice Heckscher (1884-1967) and Francis Louise Vanderhof [2] . His parents divorced in 1927, and his mother married again in 1931 [3] . Augustus had a brother Gustave Maurice Heckscher, Jr. [4] , and he himself was the grandson of the capitalist August Heckscher (1848-1941), who emigrated from Germany in 1867 [5] [5] .

August Heckscher studied at St. Paul's School in Concord ( New Hampshire ) [6] , in 1936 he graduated from Yale University , and then received a master 's degree from the administration of Harvard University [1] .

Career

During World War II, he worked at the Information Coordination Service in Washington , as well as at the Office of Strategic Services in North Africa . In addition, he was part of the US delegation to the 1945 United Nations Conference . [1]

In 1962, [7] Heckscher was appointed US President John F. Kennedy [8] [9] to serve as a special art consultant at the White House to coordinate cultural affairs. He held this position until 1963 [10] .

In 1967, Heckscher was appointed Mayor of New York by John Lindsey Commissioner to the Parks Department of New York , as the successor to Thomas Hoving , who, in turn, was appointed director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art [11] [12] . Under Heckscher, a Barbara Streisend concert was organized in Central Park in 1970, which subsequently gathered about 250 thousand people, the first New York marathon , as well as several large anti-war demonstrations. [1] Heckscher left the post of Commissioner of the Parks Department in 1972 [13] [ 14] .

August Heckscher II died on April 5, 1997 at the New York Hospital [1] . His widow Claude survived him for eleven years and died in 2008 [15] .

Personal life

Since 1941 [6] , Heckscher was married to Claude Chevroe (died in 2008) [15] , daughter of Charles Chevro of Clermont-Ferrand in France , Prefect of the Department of Puy-de-Dome , and earlier of the French delegate in Algeria and French Morocco [6] . Since her parents could not attend the wedding, her cousin Pierre Landry married her [4] .

August Heckscher and Claude Chevro had three children:

  • Stephen August Heckscher - co-founder and co-founder of his estate with Francis Morrissey Jr. [16] . Stefan married Donna Elizabeth Hunt in 1966. [17]
