Biography
Maria Poelevna Karp was born in Leningrad . Her father is Karp, Poel Meerovich is a poet, ballet scholar, sociologist, translator.
She graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute (Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute) named after A.I. Herzen .
Started to print in 1983 . Translated English and German poetry and prose. The translations of Maria Karp include: Dylan Thomas , W.H. Oden , Elizabeth Jennings [3] , Andreas Griffius [4] , Nikolaus Lenau , Virginia Woolf [5] , George Orwell , Alice Munroe [6] .
Since 1991, Maria Karp has been living in London . From 1991 to 2009 she worked at the BBC World Service: in 1991-1997 she was a producer, and in 1997-2009 - editor of the thematic programs department of the Russian BBC Service. During these years, she continued to acquaint Russian readers with Western literature, but now not only with translations, but also with radio programs and articles [7] .
On the radio, Maria Karp conducted regular broadcasts: “Bookstore” (1991-2008) - about new English and American literature and “Dictionary of English life” (1992-1998) - about new words that appear in English, and also made separate programs about English writers: Agatha Christie , Aldous Huxley , Iris Murdoch , Malcolm Bradbury and others. In the radio shows of the Russian BBC service, the plays translated by her were heard: “In Milk Channel” by Dylan Thomas in 2004 and “Storm in the Ocean” by Tom Stoppard in 2008 .
At the same time, she introduced Russian-speaking readers to Russian culture, publishing articles in English and American periodicals and in online publications. One of the constant topics of Maria Karp is relations between Russia and the West. Her broadcasts are dedicated to this story: “Comrade Prince” - about D. Mirsky (1990); “Kotelyansky - Russian translator of the Bloomsbury group” (1993); “Joseph Brodsky and the West” (1996); “Nabokovsky Crossroads” (1999); “Relatives abroad. Since 1993, Maria Karp is a member of the Writers' Union of St. Petersburg , and since 2005 , the Guild of the “Master of Literary Translation” Guild. Chairman of the London Pushkin Club, member of the board of the British Orwell Society and editor of the journal published by the company [8] .
