The city is harmoniously inscribed in a complex mountainous terrain near the Leaping Tiger Gorge and Lake Lugu (2685 m above sea level ). The native population of these places are Nashi , who created the Dunba culture, which includes a kind of hieroglyphic writing . Dayan appeared about eight hundred years ago as a settlement on the way of tea traders to the sea.
Lijiang better than all other cities in South China has preserved medieval buildings with characteristic tiled roofs. An inventive water supply system is also of great historical interest.
Lijiang’s life and the customs of the locals are described in detail in the autobiographical novel “The Forgotten Kingdom ” by Russian traveler Peter Gullart , who lived in the city from 1942 to 1949.
