Biography

Born on August 23, 1843 in a village of Padenki, Arkhangelsk province, in a peasant family.

After the abolition of serfdom in Russia , he left for Rostov-on-Don , where he first worked as a clerk at a cast iron foundry. Then he underwent legal training in St. Petersburg and was appointed to the post of notary of the Taganrog District Court, enrolled in the merchant class according to the second guild. Following Ivan Stepanovich, a significant part of his countrymen left for the Don. [one]

Levanidov became one of the first notaries in Rostov-on-Don: he acquired a significant clientele, he was trusted not only as a notary, but also as an adviser on civil and commercial and civil matters - he became authoritative. Work in the City Duma

In 1881, Ivan Stepanovich Levanidov was elected to the city council of Rostov-on-Don and worked in it until the end of his life. For several four-year terms, he headed the city finance commission. In October 1889 he was elected mayor and was in this position until May 1892. For some time Levanidov represented the Duma in a special presence in urban affairs with the military ataman of the Don Army . [3]

Engaged in charity. The Rostov city hospital was built during his reign - he himself donated 15,000 rubles from his funds and attracted local merchants, banks, and homeowners to donate. He also took part in church construction, the construction of covered markets in Rostov-on-Don. In 1894, thanks to his troubles, a river committee was created in the city, the only public institution in Russia in charge of river improvement and shipping.
