“Pride” ( Arabic. ذيب ) is the historical drama of 2014 by British-Jordanian director Nadji Abu Nuwara of co-production of a number of Arab countries and the United Kingdom. The main character of the film is a little Bedouin boy, who is to survive in the vast desert of Wadi Rum [1] . The film takes place against the backdrop of the Middle East theater of the First World War , after the Great Arab uprising against the ruling Ottoman Empire [2] . The film involved non-professional actors from the Bedouin community in southern Jordan, and the film genre is also called the “Bedouin Western”. The theme of growing up is one of the central ones in the picture [3] .

The film premiered as part of the Horizons program at the 71st Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2014, where Abu Nouvar received the prize for best director [4] [5] . The film was nominated for an Oscar for best film in a foreign language at the 88th ceremony , which was the first time for films from Jordan [6] [3] . At the 69th BAFTA Award Ceremony , Pride was nominated for the best non-English language film [7] , and Nadji Abu Nouvar and Rupert Lloyd won the BAFTA Award for the best debut of the British scriptwriter, director or producer [8] .
Content
Story
The bedouins from the tribal confederation Howoveit host guests: a British officer and his Arabic translator. The latter need a guide from the local, who could carry them on a safe path to the destination of the Englishman. The road is dangerous because of the robbers left without work after the opening of the Hejaz railroad and therefore robbery. The son of the recently deceased Sheikh Hussein becomes a guide. His younger brother is tied up for travelers and catching up when they stopped for the night. Travelers can no longer send the boy back, and they have to take him with them. From this begins his journey, which forced him to survive a hasty adulthood.

Criticism
The film received positive reviews from most critics, some of whom described it as a “Bedouin Western” [9] . The performance of the leading actor and the successful debut of the director were noted [10] . Matt Damon , being in Jordan on the set of the film The Martian , saw the trailer "Pride", was happily surprised by the quality of her shooting, praising its creators [11] . Queens of Jordan Nour al-Hussein and Rania al-Abdullah did not hide their joy in social networks after the nomination of the film for the Oscar [12] [13] .
