The year of her marriage to Waldemar is unknown; her husband was king of Denmark from 1326 to 1329, and if she married him before 1329, she is the queen of Denmark. They had two sons:
- Waldemar (1338–1360) - Crown Prince of Sweden
- Henry (1342–1375) - Duke of Schleswig since 1364
Richard is mostly known on one occasion in 1358 during the war between her husband and King of Denmark Waldemar IV Atterdag . Atterdag besieged Sonderborg Castle on the Als , which at that time was the residence of Richard. She defended the castle for a long time, but when it became impossible, she opened the gate and went to the king with her daughters and all the women who were in the castle, "in an attempt to beg for mercy from the victorious gentleman." She succeeded, and Atterdag agreed to leave the castle under her control of the castle, provided that she would not participate in the war. In 1364, her son made peace with Atterdag.
In 1373, as the widow of Richard, Atterdag made Lord Protector of her possessions, including Als. This is the last time she is mentioned in historical records; in 1386, her nephew Otton VI, Earl of Tecklenburg , gave permission to his nephew Erich Saxe-Lauenburgsky to receive an inheritance from Richard on his behalf.
