Biography
Ilona was the daughter of the king of Hungary Geza II and his wife Euphrosyne Mstislavna , the daughter of the Grand Duke of Kiev Mstislav the Great and his second wife Lyubava Dmitrievna . Little is known about her life and personality. It is known that she married the Duke of Austria Leopold V on Pentecost 1174. The marriage reflected the western orientation of the Hungarian Arpad house in connection with the expansionist policies of the Byzantine emperor Manuel Comnenus . Sister Leopold Agnes has already married the king of Hungary Istvan III , elder brother Ilona, who died in 1172.
Ilona and Leopold had children; he died on December 31, 1194 as a result of a fall from a horse. Ilona died five years later in 1199 [1] and was buried next to her husband in Heiligenkreuz Abbey.
