Construction History

After the suppression of the White Guard uprising due to shelling, a third of all the buildings in the city lay in ruins (2147 of the 7688 existing residential buildings in the city were completely destroyed). [1] The new government in the city was faced with the task of providing housing for homeless people and building a city of the future that would meet new values and lifestyles after the October Revolution. In 1924, the master plan of the city “New Yaroslavl” was adopted, whose experts included the country's leading architects - V. N. Semenov, I. V. Zholtovsky, A. P. Ivanitsky and others. [2]

Typical building

The project of residential buildings was selected at the All-Union competition initiated by K. I. Butusov in 1926, which received 98 projects from all over the country. [3] Soviet architects sought to introduce “new content” into the projects, reflecting the transition to a new life and the triumph of communist ideals. The winning project of the architect V.V. Kratyuk was the first in line for execution.

In 1927, laid the foundation for the first three houses. For the first time in Yaroslavl, a whole residential complex was simultaneously built. A year later, the fourth and fifth houses were completed, while the first ones were already finishing work and engineering communications. In the fall of 1928 laid the foundation of the sixth house, in 1929 - the seventh. In January 1929, the first five houses were commissioned. They populated them room by room. 6,000 applications were received for 240 seats. In distribution, the rigid class principle triumphed. As a result, 80 percent of the housing was received by workers, the rest was given to “Red Army men and employees living in adverse conditions.” [one]

Layout

The village consists of seven four-story U-shaped houses (Sverdlova street, d. 21, 21a, 23, 23a, 25/28, Pushkin St., 20, Tchaikovsky St., 56). [4] Mirrored houses form a system of "yard", which, as conceived by the architect, should become the center of public life. In addition to residential premises, the houses provide for objects of trade and social services (laundry, consumer goods store, etc.). For residents of the village, a club was organized in the former synagogue, located in the neighborhood.

Butusovsky Park was established west of the village, declared in 1944 the main park of the city. At the beginning of the XXI century, despite the protests of city defenders, the cutting down of the park and its development with retail and office facilities began [5] [6] [7] .
