History
In the late 1940s, a basketball club called Al-Mansour was created, where many advanced Iraqi basketball players of those years played. The team won the 1958 Adhamia tournament. In the early 1960s, the club was disbanded, and its administrative board founded the new Al-Karkh sports club, which is considered the successor to Al-Mansur [1] .
Since its founding in 1963, Al-Karkh has not been able to advance into the Iraqi Premier League for 27 years, all the while the club has played in the lower divisions.
On November 23, 1983, Uday Hussein founded a new sports club called Al-Rashid, which began to be based at Al-Karkh Stadium. Al-Rashid soon became the most successful club in Iraq and entered the big league in its first season. Later in seven years, the club won three champion titles, two Iraqi cups , three Arab Champions League and reached the final in the AFC Champions League .
On August 18, 1990, the Iraqi National Olympic Committee decided to dissolve Al-Rashid, transfer all its infrastructure to the Al-Karkh club and give Al-Karkh an Al-Rashid place in the Iraqi Premier League.
When Al-Karh took Al-Rashid’s place in the Iraqi Premier League, the team for the first time in its history played in the top league of Iraqi football. Many Iraqi players, such as Adnan Dirzhal, Haris Mohammed and Samir Shaker , left the sport after the dissolution of Al-Rashid, the rest moved to other clubs like Ahmad Radi, Lait Hussein and Habib Jafar. In its first season in the top division (1990/91), Al-Karh finished in fourth place with 38 points [2] .
Under the leadership of Adnan Dirzhal, Al-Karh showed the best result in history, taking third place in the 1991/92 season and three points behind the leader. Dirjal received the award for the best coach in Iraq, and Saad Qais Noaman received the best player award. Al-Karkh also ranked fourth in the 1991 Baghdad Championship [3] .
In the next four seasons, Al-Karh finished in the middle of the standings. In the Iraq Cup over the years, Al-Karkh did not show high results, but in the 1993 Baghdad championship, Al-Karkh took fourth place.
In 1996, the club participated in the tournament of the Indian Football Association. The club reached the final, losing with a minimum score after extra time JKT. In the 1996/97 season, Al-Karh finished in 14th place in the relegation zone, gaining 27 points in 30 matches. For the first time since 1990, the team flew to Iraq's First Division [4] . The club returned to the Iraqi Premier League in the 1997/98 season [5] . After increasing the club for five seasons held in the middle of the standings. In the 1999/2000 season, Al-Karkh reached the semi-finals of the Iraq Cup, where after a 1-1 draw, he lost in the penalty shootout of Al-Kuwa . The teams also met in the semifinals of the 1999 Baghdad Championship, where Al-Kuva again won the penalty shootout, but Al-Karkh won the match for third place [6] . The following season, Al-Karh repeated this result [7] .
In the 2003/04 season, when Sharar Haider was appointed the new president of the club, Al-Karkh could not get into the playoffs, the situation repeated the following season [8] . In the 2005/06 season, Al-Karh finished in the relegation zone with 12 points in 12 matches, one point behind Diyala, which avoided relegation to the First Division [9] . Al-Karh remained in the First Division until the 2009/10 season. Under the leadership of Nasrat Nassir [10] Al-Karh returned to the Premier League [11] . After two seasons, Al-Karh dropped back in class, then returned to the Premier League after winning the First Division in the 2012/13 season [12] .
Stadium
First, the Al-Mansur club acquired the old building and converted it into a basketball court, the club’s headquarters was also located there. In the late 1960s, the building began to collapse, which became the main reason for the dissolution of the club. In 1963, the newly created Al-Qarh club began to be based on the eponymous stadium [1] .
In 1984, Al-Rashid began performing at the stadium, the club renamed the stadium, carried out repairs and allowed opening stores around it. After the dissolution of Al-Rashid, the stadium was returned to the old name Al-Qarh. In 2004, the stadium was rebuilt after it was damaged by the US Air Force in the battle for Baghdad (2003) .
