Opal Australian Olympic (Olympic Australis) Record: The largest and most valuable opal in the world
The largest and most valuable opal in the world was found in 1956, in the opal field "Eighth Mile" (Eight-Mile), in the mining town of Coober Pedy (Coober Pedy), in southern Australia. It was discovered at a depth of 9.144 meters and was named Australian Olympic Opal because of the Olympic Games held at that time in Melbourne. It has an amazing weight of 17,000 carats (3450 grams) and its jewelery quality is 99%.
In 2005, the price of Australian Olympic Opal was AUD 2.5 million. Due to the purity of the gem, about 7 thousand carats could be cut from it, but due to the fact that the stone is so unique, it will be left in its original organic form. Currently, Australian Olympic opal is stored in Melbourne, in the office of Altmann & Cherny Ltd.
