Creation and first record

In an interview given by Arthur Hamilton in 2010, he assured that before creating his song, he had never heard the expression “to cry somebody a river” , and he “just liked the combination of words” - “Cry Me a River” (literally: “ pay me a river ”,“ pour tears about me with a stream ”), and this phrase seemed cleverer to him than“ I’ll get even with you ”or others, as an answer to“ who hurt your feelings or broke your heart ”. Hamilton’s only concern was that at the beginning of the phrase you could hear Crimea (from the English - “ Crimea ”) instead of “Cry Me a ...” , and then the audience would think that the song is dedicated to a river in Crimea. Cry Me a River was originally written for Ella Fitzgerald in the movie Pete Kelly's Blues, but the song was not used. Subsequently, Fitzgerald performed "Cry Me a River" for the album Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! (1961). And the first release of the song took place in 1955 - the song was performed by Julie London to the accompaniment of Barney Kessel (guitar) and Ray Leterwood (bass). The record became popular when it hit the 1956 film “This Girl Can't Help It ” ( English The Girl Can't Help It ), and in 2016 it was included by the Library of Congress in the National Register of Audio Records .
