Life
Margarita was the daughter of King Eric IX of Sweden and Queen Christina Bjørnsdotter . In 1189, she married the King of Norway Sverrira . In the sagas, Queen Margarita is portrayed as an intriguer [2] .
She became a widow in 1202, returned to her native Sweden and retired to her estates in Westergötland and Vermland . Going to Norway, she had to leave her daughter Christina Sverresdotter against her will. She spent two years in Sweden and returned to Norway in 1204.
On January 1, 1204, two days after she returned to Norway, her stepson King Hakon III died with obvious symptoms of poisoning. Suspicion of poisoning the king fell on Margarita. One of her servants tried to prove the innocence of the lady in court by trial , but failed. The servant drowned, and Margarita fled back to Sweden.
Margarita returned to Norway in 1209 at the wedding of her daughter. Her daughter married co-ruler Philip Simonsson , a candidate for the Bagler party to the throne of Norway. Immediately after the wedding, she became ill and died a few weeks later [2] .
