Prototypes
A literary character appeared in 1924 in a book published in the Leningrad branch of Detgiz and entitled "Doctor Aibolit." On the title page it is indicated as a retelling by K. Chukovsky, while the title page indicates the year of publication as 1925 (typical publishing ploy). Thus, the prototype of Dr. Aibolit was another literary character - Dr. Dolittle , created by Hugh Lofting [1] .
Work on the retelling of the book of Lofting was completed by Chukovsky back in 1923 [1] .
A little later, Dr. Aibolit became the hero of the author’s poem tale "Barmalei", published in 1925, and written in November 1924 [1] .
Many years later, Chukovsky himself claimed that the prototype of Dr. Aibolit was the famous Jewish doctor and public figure Tsemah Shabad , who lived in Vilnius - Korney Chukovsky twice stayed in his house [2] during his visits to Vilnius in 1905 and 1912 (May 15, 2007 in the Old Town of Vilnius , at the intersection of Disnos and Messinou Streets, a monument was unveiled to Shabad [3] [4] ).
The source of such “confusion” can be considered the situation of “the duality of the hero, his parallel existence in two competing spaces at once” (that is, the simultaneous presence of Aibolit both in the poetic works of Chukovsky himself and in the prosaic retelling of the text of Lofting) [1] .
