Biography
Osterwald was born in 1729, received his upbringing in the land gentry cadet corps , which he entered in 1741. Even when he was in the corps, Osterwald gained some fame at the court of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, thanks to his artistic abilities. Together with his comrades - Beketov, Melissino, Razumovsky and Svistunov, he took part in theatrical performances and attracted attention.
Produced on February 12, 1760 as a lieutenant colonel, Osterwald was appointed an informant in the same year to Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich and remained in this position until the crown prince entered into marriage. To teach him was entrusted with history, geography, Russian and German; but his teaching was dry, lifeless: only names and numbers were communicated to the Tsarevich ; while Osterwald, despite the certificate issued to him from the corps about a good knowledge of the Russian language, was very poorly expressed in Russian. “I could not bear it,” another teacher told in his notes. Prince "Pavel Petrovich - S. A. Poroshin - in order not to correct it, hearing a perverse reprimand and a rumor to the Russian rumor." According to the same Poroshin, the Grand Duke did not like Osterwald; however, due to his honesty, he did not lose his position at the Court of Empress Catherine the Great and Emperor Paul. He died in the 1790s, reaching the rank of senator and the rank of Privy Councilor.
