Biography
Born into a poor family of a farmer and merchant.
He worked as a bailiff in Paris, switching to journalism and politics, in 1888 he headed the publication Le Petit Parisien. He achieved the fact that his circulation during the Dreyfus Cause reached 1 million copies. On the pages of the newspaper he actively defended the free trade regime, which almost all representatives of the French business elite of that time wanted to cancel.
In 1891 he was elected a senator and joined the left Republicans.
- 1899-1902 - Minister of Agriculture of France. In this post, he created the Crédit Agricole Bank and the Agrarian Reform Office. Having completely changed his previous views, he defended the policy of protectionism, defending the interests of French wheat producers during the debate of 1900 on the import and export of wheat and flour,
- 1909-1911 - Minister of Commerce and Industry,
- 1912-1913 and 1914 - Minister of Public Works, Post and Telegraphs,
- 1914 - Minister of Public Works,
- 1917 - Minister of State.
In 1909 he was re-elected to the Senate, in 1911 - approved by its vice president.
Together with Raymond Poincare, he was one of the leaders of the Democratic Alliance party, uniting secular liberals.
In 1913 he began publishing the journal La Science et la Vie. Under his leadership, the circulation of Le Petit Parisien exceeded 2 million copies, becoming the most popular edition of its time.
He was a full member of the agricultural and higher committee on agriculture.
He was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery .
