Biography
Larisa Berezhnaya was born on February 28, 1961 in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR .
She first declared herself an adult internationally in the 1986 season, when she joined the Soviet national team and performed at the Goodwill Games in Moscow , where she took the seventh place in the long jump.
In 1989, she won the USSR Championship in Gomel , won a bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest .
At the Goodwill Games of 1990 in Seattle she became a silver medalist in long jump, losing only to her compatriot Inessa Kravets , while at the European Championships in Split she stopped a step away from the prize positions, becoming the fourth in the final.
In 1991, she won the World Indoor Championship in Seville and won a bronze medal at the Summer World Championships in Tokyo , where she was surpassed by American Jackie Joyner-Kersey and Heike Drexler . At the competition in Granada set a record for Ukraine, showing a result of 7.24 meters.
Having won the European Indoor Championship in Genoa , she joined the United Team and was awarded the right to defend the honor of the country at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . In the program of women's long jumps, she made only one unsuccessful attempt and, due to an injury, completed her performance ahead of time, without showing any results.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, she continued to perform at major international competitions for the Ukrainian team. So, in 1993, she took the fifth place at the World Championships in Toronto and won the silver medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart , losing to the German final Drexler.
