Name

Nomen Allienus refers to the Pitzen names in which the usual ius ending for ius was replaced with enus [1] . Aulus is the only carrier of this nomen, a famous story [2] .

Biography

According to the assumption of the antiquarian Robert Broughton , about 62 years BC. er Allien was a quaestor in Macedonia [3] . The first reliable mention of Avla in the preserved sources dates back to 61 BC. Oe., when he held the post of legate under the governor of Asia, Quinte Tullia Cicero [2] . Other legates were relatives of the governor, Lucius Eliy Tuberon and Mark Gratidius [4] . Brother Quinta Mark Tullius Cicero, in one letter to him, says: "Allien ... our man, both in his spiritual qualities and benevolence, especially in his desire to imitate us in our lifestyle" [5] . Quint stayed in the province until 58 BC. e., and Allien, apparently, all this time was his subordinate [6] .

In 49 BC er Aul held the position of praetor [7] . In this capacity, he is mentioned only once: Mark Tullius Cicero, in a letter to Atticus of May 12, writes that Allien was hoping for peace negotiations between Guy Julius Caesar and Gneem Pompey the Great , who had unleashed a civil war [8] . These hopes did not come true, and at the end of 49 BC. er Caesar, who controlled most of the western provinces by that time, appointed a certain Aulus Albin to be the governor of Sicily [9] . Researchers believe that Appian , who wrote about this, was mistaken in his name and that in reality we should speak about Avla Allien [10] . The latter, who ruled Sicily until 46 BC. e., minted a coin with the legend of C. Caesar. imp. cos. iter. RA Allienus pro cos. , participated in the preparation of Caesar's African campaign , sent reinforcements to Guy Julius after his disembarkation in Africa [11] [2] ; in particular, at the beginning of 46 BC. er He ferried across the sea XIII and XIV legions [12] .

After the murder of Caesar in 44 BC. er Allien joined the Senate "party". He again went to Asia as a legate - this time under the governor Gai Trebonii , one of the murderers Gaius Julius. Trebony at the beginning of 43 BC. er In turn, he was killed in Smyrna on the orders of the Caesarian Publius Cornelius Dolabella , who included Allien in his staff and soon sent to Egypt . Aulus’s task was to pick up four legions stationed in Egypt since the times of the Alexandrian war and necessary for Dolabella to fight for Syria with another Caesar assassin, Guy Cassius Longin . Allien was already heading north through Palestine at the head of these troops when Cassius surrounded him with eight legions. In view of the obvious inequality of forces, Aul capitulated; he later participated in military actions against Dolabella [13] [2] .

After 43 BC er Aul Allien is no longer mentioned in the sources [2] .

In culture

Aul Allien acts in the novel of the Australian writer Colin McCullough's "The October Horse."
