The state of Tamla , Tamna or (cor. Tamna-guk ) ruled Jeju Island from ancient times until it was conquered by the Korean state of Joseon in 1404 . This state is also sometimes called Tangna (탕나), Somna (섬나), and Temmora. All these names mean "island country." Tamla means in Nivkh - fish.

The state was independent until 1404, although South Korean nationalist historians dispute this by attributing to it vassal dependence on various protokorean states.
In February 1272, invasion troops were sent to Jeju Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. On the island, in addition to the local garrison, they were met by the troops of the Kamakura shogunate of the Ryujouji clan, resistance continued until April 1272 . What gave a delay in the invasion of Japan. However, until 1294, Jeju was directly controlled by the Mongols and was used as a base for a second invasion of Japan. Until it was recaptured from the Mongols by Japanese pirates from Tsushima.
