Story

The events of the story take place in the 1920s, in a Hutsul village on the Polish - Romanian border on Pokutie . Olga, the priest’s daughter, before her father’s death, promises to marry his friend Martin Pogodnyak, a Polish officer at the local border post . However, later she falls in love with the "noble robber" Ivan Semenyuk. Over time, they realize that they cannot live without each other, and decide to flee, but the wife of the robber Marichka gives out their plans to the officer.
