Formation History
The brigade was formed on September 21, 1941, on the basis of the order of the NCO No. 725373 of September 14, 1941, as the 5th tank brigade . The formation of the brigade took place on the basis of the 12th tank regiment of the 1st tank division in the city of Mozhaisk, Moscow Region , according to states No. 010/75 - 010/83.
By order of the NGO on March 5, 1942, the 5th Tank Brigade was awarded the honorary title "Guards" and the new military No. 6th Guards Tank Brigade .
On April 22, 1942, the brigade was withdrawn to the Vyazishche district of the Smolensk region for reorganization in new states.
Directive GShKA No. 36692 of February 21, 1943, the brigade was assigned a new military No. 23rd Guards Tank Brigade [1] .
Participation in hostilities
As the 6th Guards Tank Brigade “a”
Period of entry into the army : March 5, 1942 - February 22, 1943 [2] .
After the reformation, the brigade was redeployed to the Kolosovo region of the Kozelsky district to interact with the 1st Guards Cavalry Corps . From July 4 to July 23, 1942, the brigade defended in the second echelon of the 61st Army , in the area of Kolosovo, Nikitinskoye, Slobodka. Since August 11, the brigade, being part of the 16th Army , in cooperation with the 2nd Guards Cavalry Division , destroyed the enemy who broke through the defenses of the 322nd Infantry Division of the 61st Army, at the Lyady-Staritsa line. Until September 3, 1942, the brigade fought in the Lyady, Bely Kamen, Vorobyovo, Oryol and Smolensk regions.
September 21, 1942, on the day of the anniversary of the formation of the brigade, the commander of the 16th Army, Lieutenant General Baghramyan , handed over the Red Banner to the brigade.

From February 22 to March 4, 1943, the brigade from the concentration area - the village of Mikhailovka, in collaboration with the 11th Guards and 326th Rifle Divisions, conducted combat operations in the Dmitriyevka, Buda Monastyrskaya area, in the general direction of Zhizdra.
