Biography

Born into a Jewish family in Lyon, France, in 1943, “under a false name ... at the post office, which was the shelter of the Resistance movement, ” as his older brother Mark Albert confirmed. After the death of his father, Henri Levin, his mother Blanche married Emil Albert, and he adopted her children [5] . Some sources mistakenly claim that his father was a Yemenite Jew whose family settled in Jerusalem at the beginning of the 20th century [6] ; according to his brother Halevi Mark, when Halevi went to Israel , “he received a passport with the certificate of a Yemeni who lived there” and this is the reason why his origin is sometimes indicated as Yemeni [5] .

In the early 1960s, he worked in the literary magazines Les Temps modernes and Présence Africaine . His first novel, Intersection, published in 1964 [5] , received favorable reviews and was described by Lillian Smith in The Saturday Review as “a brilliant, mind-blowing story about a young man’s journey from nowhere to hell ... a fresh look at the layered the agony of walled youth ” [7]

In 1965, at the age of 22, Alain Alber moved to Israel, where he began to use the surname Halevi [5] . They said that according to him, he “came to Israel, because in Algeria I discovered the importance of the Palestinian problem. I sat there in coffee houses, heard people, spoke with intellectuals, and I realized that the Palestinian question worries the people of the Arab world , it really is at the center of their obsessive thoughts. I decided that I want to study this reality closely and from the inside ... I wanted to study the Israeli reality ” [8] Halevi joined the Palestinian resistance movement and, in particular, Fatah after the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 [4] , and subsequently became prominent member of the PLO. He was the representative of the PLO in Europe and the Socialist International , as well as the PLO Deputy Foreign Minister, participating in this capacity at the 1991 Madrid Conference . Halevi was elected a member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council in 2009 [9] and served as an adviser to Yasser Arafat [10] [11] . He was awarded the Distinction Medal for his role in supporting the Palestinian struggle of President Mahmoud Abbas. [4]

In the early 1970s, Halevi was a member of Maawak (“The Struggle”), “a small radical Israeli anti-Zionist group” [5] . Prior to this, he was part of the ultra-left anti-Zionist organization Matzpen , from which Maawak separated [8] . Ian Halevi joined the PLO in 1976, a year after moving to Paris [5] .

After the signing of the 1994 peace agreements, Halevi lived in Jerusalem and then in Ramallah . His home in Ramallah was destroyed during Operation Rampart in 2002. Ilan Halevi died in Clichy July 10, 2013 at the age of 69 years [5] . Farewell to him took place in Paris in the crematorium of the cemetery of Pere Lachaise [12] .
