Biography
Born in 1912 in the family of an employee. In 1936 she graduated from the Irkutsk Medical Institute and was sent to the regional hospital of the working village of Ust-Karsk, Chita Region, where she worked as a surgeon. Since 1937, she worked as a surgeon in the central clinic of Chita [1] . In 1938-1940, the organizer and chief doctor of the regional blood transfusion station.
In 1940 she entered graduate school at the surgical clinic of the Central Institute of Blood Transfusion (head - Professor S. I. Spasokukotsky ) in Moscow. During the Second World War, she interrupted her studies and worked as a surgeon preparing blood for the fronts and instructor for blood transfusion of the USSR Ministry of Health . Organized and instructed blood transfusion stations in the Far East [2] .
In 1944, she resumed her studies at the Department of Surgery of the Central Institute of Blood Transfusion (TSOLIPK Ministry of Health of the USSR). In 1946, she defended her Ph.D. dissertation and worked as a researcher at TsOLIPK , where she studied the problems of surgery of the circulatory system diseases. In 1959 she defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic “Portal hypertension syndrome and its surgical treatment” [2] [3] .
In 1965, she organized and headed (from 1965 to 1981) [4] the first in the USSR specialized department for the surgical treatment of portal hypertension , created at the All-Union Scientific Center for Surgery [2] on the basis of the city hospital No. 20 (director - academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Prof. B.V. Petrovsky). He is the founder of a comprehensive, complete and original doctrine of domestic surgery of portal hypertension [5] . In 1979, on the basis of the department, the All-Union Center for Surgery of Portal Hypertension was opened, to which methodically specialized specialized departments of surgery of portal hypertension created in a number of large hospitals of the country were equipped, equipped with modern equipment for a comprehensive study of the liver, stomach, and portal system [2] .
She prepared 4 doctors and 20 candidates of medical sciences. Pupils of Maria Demyanovna became major specialists in portal hypertension: K. N. Tsatsanidi, A. K. Eramishantsev , A. V. Pugaev, A. G. Scherzinger, A. B. Molitlovoslov [5] [6] .
The author and co-author of 145 scientific papers, including 4 monographs and 3 inventions [7] , devoted to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of portal hypertension, blood transfusion, surgical treatment of blood diseases [2] .
She was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor [2] .
Memory
In 2012, the international congress "Actual issues of surgical hepatology" in Irkutsk was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Maria Dementievna Patiora [8] [6] .
In 2017, the Association of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgeons of the CIS countries established the Memorial Medal of M. D. Patsior “For his contribution to the development of surgery and methods of treating portal hypertension”. On September 19, 2017, in St. Petersburg, at the XXIV Congress of the Association, one of the leading surgeons in Russia, professor, student of M. D. Patsiora Alexander G. Scherzinger, was awarded a medal with certificate No. 1.
