Background

50 Cent mentioned Jam Master Jay as the person who included him in the song on the pages of his book From Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside, Queens : [1]

“... Jam Master Jay put me on a song called 'React'. At the time we recorded the song, no one expected it to be a single. They just included me in the song as a favor to Jay because I was a new nigga at his camp. ”

Music video

The video clip for “React” was the debut work of the famous director Little X. [2] The premiere of the new Onyx video took place in the Rap City broadcast on the American cable television channel BET on June 13, 1998 [3] . The concept of the video called for rappers to be hockey players. 50 Cent spoke about his appearance in the React video when he was asked when was the last time he skated [4] .

“... I needed to learn how to ride for a video. I didn’t know anything. I asked them to put me on the penalty box ... "

The video can be found on the Onyx DVD : 15 years of video, history and violence of 2008 [5] .

The feud with 50 Cent started over React song

The beef between Onyx and 50 Cent began at the Survival Of The Illest concert at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. The concert took place on July 18, 1998. When Onyx went on tour with the Survival Of The Illest Tour, they planned to play React, so they took Scarred 4 Life (aka Clay Da Raider) with them to read the 50 Cent verse. When the tour stopped in New York on July 18, 1998, Onyx invited 50 Cent to their Apollo show to read his verse. However, when it was time for 50 Cent to read the verse, Scarred 4 Life did this instead of 50 Cent. After this incident, 50 Cent held a grudge against Onyx and splashed it out on the track “How To Rob” (August 10, 1999). A few years later, 50 Cent began a standoff with Fredro Starr at a rehearsal for the Vibe Awards in 2003. [6] In the same year, in an interview with Fredro Starr, he explained the situation, “50 Cent basically started shit with me, started a fight, and the bodyguard dragged us away. He is a wimp. He has been disrespectful to Jam Master Jay since he died. ” [6] In an interview with The Source magazine, Fredro Starr said that 50 Cent was disrespectful to the Onyx rap group, even though Onyx gave him his first a breakthrough in a song called "React" from the 1998 album, Shut 'Em Down . In a 2008 interview with AllHipHop, Fredro made a comment about 50 Cent: [7]

“... 50 Cent is a smart businessman, and, in the end, we respected him. We put it on record when we were at the top of the game. He didn't even have a car. We gave him respect with the help of Jam Master Jay. What did we get in return? Someone is slippery about us on mixtapes. About beating niggas Now I feel that this is a problem ... "
