Biography
Born with Simferopol on February 23, 1924 in the family of an employee.
Received higher education at the Yerevan Veterinary Institute . In 1947 he entered the graduate school of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR . A well-known entomologist Ivan Antonovich Rubtsov was appointed its head. In 1951, he defended his thesis on the topic “Fauna of midges of the Armenian SSR”. From 1961 until the end of his life, he was head of the sector of the entomology laboratory of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. In 1989, at the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Systematics and Ecology of Horse Flies of the Caucasus ( Diptera , Tabanidae )" [1] [2] .
He died in Yerevan on January 7, 1996 .
Scientific Achievements
He made a significant contribution to the knowledge of the fauna, ecology, and taxonomy of dipterans of Transcaucasia. Described 12 species of this family: Greniera nairica Terteryan, 1972 , Metacnephia hajotsdzorensis (Terteryan, 1962) , Metacnephia hirta ( Rubtsov & Terteryan, 1954) , Prosimulium frontatum Terteryan, 1956 , Simulium arpiense (Terteryan & Kachvoryan, 1982) Kachvoryan, 1982 , Simulium aureofulgens Terteryan, 1949 , Simulium chubarevae (Kachvoryan & Terteryan, 1981) , Simulium debacli (Terteryan, 1952) , Simulium fontanum Terteryan, 1952 , Simulium reginae Terteryan, 1949 , Simulium stenophallum 3 Terteryan . Type specimens are in the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences [4] . One of the first in the Soviet Union to initiate a karyosystematic study of midges . He revealed the features of the stages of the life cycles of horseflies: egg-laying, habitats of larvae. He studied daily and seasonal rhythms of activity. Information on parasites and predators of horseflies has been supplemented. Based on the analysis of the signs of the external structure of the larvae and adult horseflies of the Palearctic, eight morphological types were distinguished: pangonioid, sylvioid, chrysopsoid, hematopotoid, nanoinchoid, hepatatoid, therioplectoid and tabanoid. He proposed a hypothesis about the directions of evolution of horseflies in the Cenozoic and the stages of the formation of feeding females with horsefly blood. Terteryan was a member of the Presidium of the All-Union Entomological Society and chairman of the Armenian branch of the society. He was a member of the editorial board of the journal Entomological Review . He took part in the organization of several large conferences on the study of the fauna of Transcaucasia [1] . He supervised the preparation of four candidate dissertations [2] . Among the most famous students of Terteryan is a specialist in karyosystematics of midges Eugeni Ashotovka Kachvoryan [5] .
