Biography
By origin - from the Orenburg Bashkirs (presumably from the nobles). He studied in the Omsk cadet corps, after graduation, he served in various institutions in Petropavlovsk, Akmola region [1] . In 1850 he worked as a secretary of Art. Sultan of the Kokshetau district order of Shyngys (Chingiz) Ualikhanov (Valikhanov) ; in 1863-1867 he worked as a teacher in a Kazakh school in Omsk ; from 1867 - translator of the governor general in Tashkent [3] (according to other sources, since 1870 he was a translator at the diplomatic service of the office of the Turkestan governor general [1] ). In 1870-1890 - editor of the newspaper Turkestan vilayet gazite (Newspaper of the Turkestan Territory; supplement to the newspaper Turkestan Vedomosti, Tashkent ), published in Kazakh and Uzbek (according to other sources, he was an editor in 1870-1881, and in 1880 and 1881 he headed the Russian embassies in Bukhara , since 1881 - the consul in Kashgar (China), since 1886, the representative of the Turkestan governor-general in St. Petersburg [1] ). In 1890 (according to other sources, in 1891 [4] ) he was appointed the first [2] consul general of Russia in Jeddah [1] [3] .
He was a close friend of Sh. Ualikhanov. In 1861, visiting Sh. Ualikhanov, he recorded and prepared for publication a collection of his works, which were published in 1904. In 1870, organized in Tashkent "Turkestan branch of lovers of natural history, anthropology and ethnography" of the Russian Geographical Society . In 1892, during the Hajj, he died near Mecca , according to the official version - from cholera [2] , although there is a hypothesis that he was killed by Islamic fanatics [4] [5] .
He studied the life and culture of the Kazakh people, collected ethnographic and folklore material, which he published on the pages of the publications of the Russian Geographical Society (“Kyrgyz proverbs and sayings”, 1868; “Ethnographic essays of the Kyrgyz people”, 1872; “On the mullahs in the Kyrgyz steppe”, 1874; “Essays on the Kyrgyz”, 1876; “Notes on the Kyrgyz court”, 1878 and many others) [3] . Issued several issues of the "Uzbek calendar" in the Uzbek language. Compiled by the “Explanatory Dictionary of Household and Traditional Words of the Kazakh Language” [1] . The author of translations of the works of L. N. Tolstoy and other Russian writers, as well as the collection of fairy tales “ A Thousand and One Nights ” [4] [6] .
