Since 1982, at his own request, he was transferred to the Alpha Special Purpose Group of the KGB of the USSR . Member of numerous special operations of the hostage release group. Since 1983, a participant in special operations during the hostilities in Afghanistan (military internship). In 1988, during the Karabakh conflict, he ensured the personal safety of a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU, A. I. Volsky , sent to the conflict zone by M. S. Gorbachev with broad powers [1] . In 1989, he participated in the destruction of terrorists and the release of hostages in the city of Saratov . In 1990, he was directly involved in the development of the plan and in the special operation to free the hostages in the pre-trial detention center of the city of Sukhumi , for his courage in this operation he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner [2]

Since 1995, he participated in special operations during the First and Second Chechen Wars. In 1995, he participated in the operation to free the hostages captured by the Basayevites in Budyonnovsk . In 2001, in Chechnya, at the head of his department, he led a special operation to destroy the odious field commander, who was Khattab's right hand, for this operation he was awarded the Order of Courage [2] .

In 2002, as the head of the assault group, he participated in a special operation on Dubrovka , for this operation he received the 4th Class Order of Merit to the Fatherland with swords [2] . According to A.V. Mikhailov about that operation:

“... Years passed. I often recall these terrible hours and also ask myself the question: who is to blame for the hostages dead? The time of bloodless assaults of the 80s has passed ... Then the professionals in the matter of releasing the hostages were wiser than the terrorists themselves, and even terrorism itself was still in the cradle. Now terrorism has matured. In Soviet times, to find a grenade or explosive at home from a Soviet citizen is an emergency for the entire Union. Now tens of thousands of unregistered trunks are walking across the country. Due to the fact that someone either took money from a terrorist, or simply did not pay attention to the performance of their official duties, dozens of people were killed, and buckets of slops were poured onto the heroes from special units. After all, we, special forces, do not kill, but save the hostages. This is our job. We can do it. But it would be better if it became smaller. Better for all of us ... "
