History

In January 1939, the Bulgarian-Swiss society Granatoid and the German companies Scholberg Zinc, Otto Wolf and Felten and Guillaume founded the Pirin Joint-Stock Company [2] to develop lead-zinc polymetallic ores in the eastern Rhodopes . Work began on the construction of mines and infrastructure. After the Second World War, according to the terms of the peace treaty, the USSR acquired the assets of German capital in Pirin JSC, so GORUBSO - Mining Bulgarian-Soviet society was formed. In October 1955, the Soviet side transferred its part of the property to Bulgaria’s Mountain Council.

Activity

Belonging to the JSC GORUBSO-Kardzhali, the Kardzhali concentrator is the oldest operating concentrator in Bulgaria. It was commissioned in 1941, repeatedly underwent modernization [3] .

Until 2006, the factory processed lead-zinc ore from the Enyovce, Pcheloyad and Chala deposits [3] .

In March 2006, the ore reserves were exhausted, the factory was redeveloped for gold-bearing ore from the Chala deposit, and the gravity ore beneficiation method was used [3] .

In 2012, the technology of extraction of noble metals from sediment was introduced. New technology - CIL- process (carboninleach) - provides a high degree of gold extraction. Production complies with EU environmental requirements (Directive 2006/21 / EC) regulatory documents of the Republic of Bulgaria [3] .

The transition to the processing of gold ore caused public concern in Kardzhali; public hearings were held on the possible negative impact on the environment with the participation of the head of the community administration Kardzhali Hasan Azis , the commune deputies and Zhivka Kovacheva, the executive director of GORUBSO-Kardzhali [4] .

About 600 people work at the enterprise (including mines) (10% of them have higher education [5] ), the average salary exceeds 1,000 leva (according to 2013 data), employees are provided with free meals [6] .
