Biography
In 1305, after the death of his father, Gartnat Domnall inherited the title of Count ( Mormer ) Mar. It is likely that in 1306 Domnall was captured by the British along with the Scottish royal family. The young earl was sent to Bristol , he was brought up at the English royal court, became close to the Prince of Wales Edward Carnarvonsky .
In 1314, after the British were defeated by the Scots in the Battle of Bannockburn, Count Domnall, like many Scottish captives, was freed. Arriving in Newcastle , he decided not to return to Scotland and stay in England, receiving content from King Edward II . In 1322 Domnall participated on the side of the King of England Edward II in the Battle of Boroughbridge against the insurgent English barons. In the same 1322 Domnall participated in an unsuccessful British expedition to Scotland. In 1326, as a reward for loyalty, King Edward II granted Domnallu the position of the constable of Bristol Castle. Domnall remained in England until November 1326, when King Edward II was ousted from the throne by his wife Isabella.
At home, King Robert I Bruce favorably received his nephew Domnalla and returned the county of Mar to him. In August 1327, Earl Mara participated in the invasion of the Scottish army in Northern England.
In July 1332, the regent of Scotland, Thomas Randolph, 1st Earl of Moray , passed away. On 2 August of the same year Domnall, Count Mara, was elected at the meeting of the Scottish Parliament in Perth by the new regent of the kingdom.
In August 1332, Edward Balliol invaded Scotland with a small army, enjoying the support of Edward III, the King of England. Robert Bruce, Lord Lyddsdale , the illegitimate son of King Robert I Bruce, openly accused Count Mara of treason. Count Domnall, in order to prove his patriotism, announced that he would be the first to fight the British. On August 11, 1332, the royal army under the command of Count Mara was defeated by Edward Balliol at the Battle of Dapplin-Mure . The new regent Domnall himself, Count of Mara, his accuser Robert Bruce, Lord Lyddsdale, and a number of Scottish nobles died in the battle.
