German (died in 604 ) - Byzantine commander of the beginning of the VII century , who commanded the army at the early stage of the Iran-Byzantine war of 602-628 . He died in the battle of Constantine .

Biography
About the early years of Herman there is no news. In 588, he was elected by the military as a commander during the army rebellion, replacing in this post. Despite the restoration of discipline in the army and the victory over the Iranian army, he was convicted by a military tribunal and sentenced to death. However, he was pardoned and awarded by the will of the Emperor of Mauritius [1] .
In 602, Herman was appointed commandant of the important Byzantine fortress of Dara , located on the territory of Mesopotamia . In 603, Herman was attacked by one of the soldiers of Lilia, a Byzantine court, who sided with the Persians. He was injured, but survived [2] [3] .
At the end of 603, the Byzantine commander of the eastern parts , who remained faithful to Mauritius after his death, rebelled against the emperor Foki . By order of Foki, Herman besieged Narses at Edessa . However, the army of Shahinshah Khosrov II came to the aid of the rebels, seeking to return the lost lands and avenge his ally Mauritius [3] [4] . Herman decided to fight back the Persians and met them near the city of Constantine . In the battle that followed, his army was defeated, and the general himself was seriously wounded and died a few days later [3] [5] .
