Commune
Tessenderlo is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. It is here that the three Belgian provinces of Limburg, Flemish Brabant and Antwerp meet near Averbode Abbey. The municipality of Tessenderlo includes the villages of Tessenderlo, Jester, Engsbergen, Hulst and Berg.
Tessenderlo is located along the Albert Canal and the European route E313 , the highway between Antwerp and Liège . This is one of the reasons why in the 1960s this municipality became the site of the first Belgian “industrial zone of national importance”.
Tessenderlo was the scene of the notorious industrial disaster during World War II when a stock of 150 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded on April 29, 1942 at the chemical plant Produits Chimiques de Tessenderloo (now Tessenderlo Chemie), located near the city center, killing 189 people in the factory and in the city .
The Tessenderlo is part of the small western zone of Limburg, where they speak not the Limburgian , but the Brabant dialect.
